Heleen van der Merwe is an experienced Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) who currently leads the Speech and Language Therapy Department at the Rashid Centre, a role she has held since 2023 after joining the team in 2019.

She manages a team of eight SLTs and provides individual sessions and weekly language groups within classrooms, working closely with teachers to create environments rich in communication opportunities. In addition, Heleen visits mainstream schools and supports children through the Centre’s communication outreach program in the afternoons.

Her expertise includes developing all aspects of communication, such as listening, expressive language, articulation, and AAC systems like British Makaton, picture symbols, and high-tech devices. She also plays a key role in training multidisciplinary teams and guiding parents, ensuring that communication support is consistent across all settings. Her holistic approach promotes meaningful engagement, empowering children to express themselves and connect with the world around them.
